What I see all the time is the wedge anchors easily ripped out of the concrete when the hilo hits them. Wedge anchors are left for things such as bolting pallet racking down, stands, electrical boxes, guard rails, ETC.Īctually, Epoxy would be far better suited to anchor guard rails and bumper posts down. The only valid argument here is redundancy. Even if you have what appears to be a smooth hole, there's lots of little edges in there to hang onto. It has to do with the porous nature of concrete. Once you expand the wood with the screw, nothing is going to pull that plug out. I use grease to install dowel plugs for screwing boxes into concrete. I'd say you would end up with what the epoxy people rate the bond as using this method, but would have the advantage of being able to torque your anchors before the set time. Adding epoxy to this bonds the friction-stuck anchor to the hole and fills the hole, thus further increasing the surface contact with the anchor and the concrete. With a wedge anchor, you have 100% strength hold when you follow the manufacturers directions. drill the hole per the application and it should be fine. be it 3/4' hole and 5/8' bolt with epoxied, or a 5/8' expansion bolt. So in short if you use both, you only get 1/2 the hold of aether, not the combined hold of both but a reduced hold.īoth systems work effectively, chose one and use it per the applications needs. by mixing the 2 you reduce the friction between the expansion nut parts but allowing small amounts of epoxy between it and the cement, at the same time the epoxy is limited in its holding ability's by the expansion nuts reducing the surface area it has to work with. The epoxy use the hole surface to get its hold, the expansion nut uses its expand part to hold.
